About IPv6

When it comes to Internet Protocol, staying current is crucial to doing business effectively. The last top-level (/8) block of free IPv4 addresses was assigned in February of 2011. The available addresses that remain will not last long. Phenomenal growth has created a need for more addresses than IPv4 can provide. That’s why IPv6, which allows for vastly more numerical addresses, was developed.

In addition to much higher capacity, IPv6 has many features not present in IPv4. To name a few:

  • Simplified aspects of address assignment (stateless address auto configuration) and network renumbering (prefix and router announcements) when changing Internet connectivity providers.
  •  Integrated network security.
  •  Mandated support for IPsec as a fundamental interoperability requirement.

While only in its infancy in terms of general worldwide deployment, IPv6 represents the next generation of IP addressing.  One of the first and largest showcase events to depend on IPv6, was the 2008 Summer Olympic Games in Beijing, where all network operations were conducted using IPv6. Since then, major providers of Internet services, such as Google have begun to implement IPv6 access.

IPv6 is currently supported on all major operating systems in use in commercial, business, and consumer environments, but is not compatible with IPv4 and – in essence – creates a parallel, independent network.

The public at large can rest easy since all major operating systems on personal computers and servers have been running production quality IPv6 implementation since 2010.

Migrating your business to IPv6’s higher capacity infrastructure, however, is not without its challenges.

Xelerance IPv6 Services

Our depth and knowledge in, Networking, Security and DNS makes Xelerance the perfect partner to assist you and your company in integrating IPv6 into your day-to-day operations and procedures. We can help you:

  •  Select a tunnelling provider to flow IPv6.
  • Take inventory of your internal platforms for their IPv6 capabilities.
  • Review your firewall technologies and platforms to filter appropriate IPv6 flows to match your security policies.
  •  Review your routing configurations to properly implement IPv6 throughout your Internet networks.
  • Configure and support your external, client-facing services offered over the IPv6 protocols –such as web servers, DNS, VPNs.
  • Review your C, C++, C#, Perl, Python, .Net, PHP, and Ruby code to properly support IPv6.
  • Test your applications in our IPv6 lab to determine if they can provide IPv4+IPv6 as well as IPv6-only services.
