News: Press Releases: Openswan 2.1.1 Released

Hannover, Germany -- March 17, 2004 -- Xelerance Corporation, maintainers of the popular open source Linux VPN package Openswan, have released version 2.1.1.

Openswan is the premier IPsec implementation for the Linux operating system. It currently supports 2.2, 2.4 and the new 2.6 Linux kernels, providing a single interface for system administrators to build powerful, secure and stable Virtual Private Networks (VPNs) on Linux.

New features in version 2.1.1 include NAT-Traversal, XAUTH and Virtual IP support.

"The presence of NAT-Traversal in Openswan 2.1.1 is a key development," said Michael Richardson, Vice President Research and Development at Xelerance Corporation. "Being able to maintain links to my development environment, mail servers and colleagues in a secure fashion, no matter which hotel I stay in is critical. People still think we are out of IPv4 addresses, and haven't deployed IPv6 - Openswan 2.1.1 lets me take a chunk of the Internet with me wherever I go."

Xelerance Corporation performs nightly regression testing of all Openswan 2 features. "Now that Openswan 2.1.1 has both client and server support for XAUTH, we can test it regularly. That means we can turn it on by default in the future source releases." explains Mr. Richardson. "There are lots of patches for FreeS/WAN, Super FreeS/WAN and the like out there. But which ones work? By making sure that we don't include code we can't test, we can assure users of Openswan 2 that they are getting the highest quality, stable releases of the software."

The Virtual IP feature permits a road warrior to keep the same IP address for their laptop regardless of whether they are on the road or in the office.

IPsec is the IETF standard method for securing and encrypting traffic. Openswan continues to provide both Virtual Private Network usage of IPsec, Opportunistic Encryption usage of IPsec, and wireless security (WaveSEC) usage of IPsec.
